Applications for 3-Axis CNC Machining
The process is suited to creating large or high-volume 3-axis CNC machined parts. The most ideal are components that do not need detailing on multiple sides or intricate geometric cutting. Examples include square and rectangular pieces, although 3-D milling can create more complex geometrical shapes if a vise or custom fixture holds the piece.
A technique using a modification of a 3-axis machine is 3+2 machining. The process uses a rotary cutting table and locks the piece in a fixed location.
Advantages of 3-Axis Machining
The simplicity of 3-axis CNC machining gives it advantages that include:
- Low initial costs
- Affordability for small to medium-sized businesses
- Good precision compared to other manufacturing methods
The process also works well for parts crafted in 2D and 2.5D.
Industries Using 3-Axis Machined Parts
The accuracy and versatility of 3-axis CNC machining make it useful for many industries, including:
- Automotive
- Medical equipment
- Wind and water power generation
- Aerospace
- Injection mold
These and other industries use 3-axis machined parts made from aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, brass, and other metals.
