What Is Dura-Bar?
Dura-Bar is a brand of continuous cast iron bar stock produced through a proprietary continuous casting process. Unlike traditional sand-cast iron, Dura-Bar is cast horizontally in a controlled, uninterrupted process that eliminates porosity, voids, and inconsistencies found in conventional castings. The result is a dense, uniform material with predictable properties from bar to bar — exactly what precision machining requires.
Dura-Bar is manufactured in the United States and is available in three primary grades:
- G2 Gray Iron – Excellent machinability, superior vibration damping, and outstanding wear resistance. Ideal for bushings, wear plates, and hydraulic components.
- 65-45-12 Ductile Iron – Higher tensile and yield strength than gray iron with improved ductility. A popular choice for gears, rollers, and structural components.
- D2 Semi-Steel – A harder gray iron grade offering enhanced strength and wear characteristics for heavy-duty applications.
Why We Use It
Dura-Bar's consistency is what sets it apart. Because it's continuously cast rather than poured into individual molds, each bar carries a uniform grain structure and chemistry throughout its entire length. That means less tool wear, fewer surprises mid-job, and better surface finishes — which matters when you're holding tight tolerances.
For boring, turning, and milling operations, Dura-Bar is an exceptionally machinable material. It cuts cleanly, holds dimensions well, and responds predictably to the speeds and feeds we run every day.
