Stainless Steel Characteristics
Stainless steel is formed when a variety of elements – nickel, iron ore, chromium, silicon, molybdenum, and others – are melted together. When fused, these materials create a robust alloy. While there are over 150 grades of stainless steel, and each one has unique properties, common characteristics include:

All stainless steels are iron-based alloys comprised of at least 10.5 percent chromium. The chromium in the alloy forms a self-healing protective transparent oxide layer, which resists corrosion. The oxide layer’s self-healing nature means corrosion resistance remains intact, even with additional fabrication processes. If a material’s surface is cut or damaged, it self-heals and continues to repel corrosion.
Although there are many grades of stainless steel, they are grouped into four leading families based on their metallurgical microstructure. These are:
- Austenitic stainless steel
- Ferritic stainless steel
- Martensitic stainless steel
- Duplex stainless steel
